France has many more political parties in positions of power than the United Kingdom or the United States have. France has a wide variety of parties, ranging from Pro-European to Anti-European, and far left to far right. But how do these political parties compare to those in other countries?

In the United Kingdom, political parties are the basis of government. When a official is elected, it is because of his party, not because of his charisma or reputation. Quite often, the voters know next to nothing about the official they're electing, but they do not have to know much about them. They elect them for the values of their party, and they have confidence in the official that they will represent the party to the best of their ability.

In the United States, the political party is nothing more than a means of gaining power. Once in office, most elected officials blend together into a mass of liberals and conservatives, rat

In France, the political parties are done a little differently. There are many parties fighting for control, and they come from all schools of thought. On the left, Pro-European side, France has the Greens and the Socialists. The Greens are big on ecological issues, and the Socialists are currently in a position of power, with Lionel Jospin as the Prime Minister. On the right side is the French Democracy, led by Francois Bayrou, which calls itself, "the most pro-European party in Europe." Sharing the right side is the Gaullist Rally for the Republic, which was formed by Jacques Chirac and Charles Pasqua.
