The thesis of this essay is,"How inequality in our society is affecting democracy." Social inequalities such as gender and racism have always existed in our society and were declining until about 10 years ago. Also, our standard of living seems to be declining because we aren't economically equal. We cannot be politically equal if we continue to have so many social and economic inequalities.Political equality is the most important value of democratic theory, it is the idea that we all have the capacity to make political and moral decisions and that we are equally qualified to rule. Unfortunately , not all people believe in political equality. There are those people who call themselves elites taht believe that they alone have special qualities that ordinary people dont have, such as, divine right
, aristocratic blood, or just racial superiority. They argue that only certain people have required knowledge for governing. They belive that if we were polyically equal, then we would have an inferior government. Plato argues that people are not equal in their capacity to govern , but only those specially trained in the art of government should govern. Socrates presented a parablethat no reasonable person would want to live with political eqality if they weren't trained to govern.Many political theorists have pointed out a flaw in Platos reasoning is that he didnt distinguish between technical and political competence.
