Is There A Relationship Between Violence and Power
Murder has become a very common word to hear in today's world; we hear it on the radio, on the television and see it in the morning paper. Why is it so common? It is so common because we live in a world with increasing amounts of violence in all mediums. The reason for this is people's desire for power. *Violence is the illegal use of physical force to injure or damage a person or their property. *Power is any person, thing, body, or nation having authority or influence. There are different kinds of power which we seek, some seek riches, some seek honor, others knowledge and some seek political power. Power will lead to violence as violence will lead to power and as long as deterrents are not as harsh there will be a problem with people, violence and power. If you think about it most countries have spent tonne's of money on arming up, some countries are on the brink of bankruptcy because of that. If every country would learn to trust each other problems like diseases, homelessness, and hunger would disappear. Sheldon S. Wolin wrote "that the hard core of power is violence and to exercise power is often to bring violence to bear on someone else's person or possession". Even though Gandhi and Martin Luther achieved their goals since that time very few have followed their footsteps and anyone who tries often forget the answer is not violence. "Courage is not a matter of muscle, but a matter of heart" Gandhi.
