It's a Better World Now
For many years, the American people have been immersed in a heated debate about racism due to the multi-cultural and ethnic differences. Many were frightened, uneducated, and ignorant to learn about others and turned to discrimination as a solution to their social and economic difficulties. In his essay The Fire Next Time, James Baldwin shared his life predicaments and some racial dilemmas that occurred in the mid-1900s. He asserted that people were mistreated because of their nationality, beliefs, and/or differences. In addition, there was much hatred, lack of understanding, and segregation among the people. However, the American people today are quite different from the Americans that Baldwin described. Through time, as well as social and economic conditions, most people learned to accommodate the different aspects of cultures and accept one another. They are aware of the existence of diversity and try to work together to make America a better country for themselves and their surroundings. Yet, there are a number of people who remain racist, but this number is not as great compared to fifty years ago. Rather than using differences as a negative tool, people have sought ways to use differences as a positive tool to help them and their surroundings to improve each other's way of life. People are not as fearful to be surrounded by other ethnicities whereas in Baldwin's time, people were fighting for rights, justice, and equality. People back then were angry because they received maltreatment and they were competing with one another for occupation. Now that our economy has improved and the rate of poverty has decreased, people are not as concern about their family's income. People are much nicer because they want to improve the country so that their children will experience better treatments and education. For example, I invited two close friends of mine, who happens to be Mexicans, to attend my high school graduation. Their arrival to my home was not a problem or a shock because my family members did not care that they were not Vietnamese. Although my family does not speak Spanish, my friends and family communicated in English pretty well. My father did not question whether or not they were Catholic, but instead, he asked me about their age and what school they were currently attending. He was not concern about their religion nor what they believed, but their personalities and qualities. My friends were not mistreated becau
