Brave New World 3

Chapter 7 marks the beginning of the climax chapters. Bernard and Lenina walk into the "Savage Reservation" and are disgusted by the dirtiness and filth that surrounds them. The differences between their "Utopia" and the Reservation amaze them.

"But cleanliness is next to fordliness," she insisted.

"Yes, and civilization is sterilization," Bernard went on...

Lenina gets very distressed after seeing the Reservation and when she goes in search of her soma she discovers that she left it in their "rest-cabin." She becomes extremely agitated because she cannot escape the reality of what surrounds her.

When Bernard and Lenina head back to their "rest-cabin" they are confronted by a man, who unlike the savages, is white with blonde hair. He says his name is John, and after Bernard and Lenina talk to him for awhile they discover that he is the son of a woman originally from the "Utopia" who had become accidentally pregnant. The woman was the one that the Director of the Hatchery had left behind so many years before. They also discovered that the woman was still alive. John talks Bernard and Lenina into going to see his "mother", Linda. Meanwhile, John has fallen in love with Lenina. At th

"Well, here," the other one went on, "nobody's supposed to belong to more than one person. And if you have people in the ordinary way, the others think you are wicked and anti-social. They hate and despise you."

While Lenina is sleeping John sneaks into the "rest-cabin" and goes through her suitcase. He goes through all of her clothes, delighted that they belong to her and that he gets to touch them. Her perfume entrances him until he hears a noise behind him. When he goes to investigate he finds Lenina asleep, and he sees her as being so trusting in her sleep that tears come to his eyes. He is so enchanted with her that he quotes Romeo and Juliet. During this time his thoughts are not entirely pure. He realizes that all he would have to do is take the zipper at Lenina's neck and give one pull...He hates himself for even thinking this impure, detestable thought.

Bernard then decides to take John and Linda back to London with him. John loves the idea, and shows his excitement by quoting Shakespeare. Bernard tells John to hold off his excitement until he actually sees the "Brave New World."

In this chapter, Bernard and Lenina return to London with John and Linda. John and Linda are finally taken into the world that they have dreamed of for so long.
