Religouos Freedom
A detailed Summary of Religouos Freedom
Should we separate our state and religion? Should the government no longer display a nativity scene during Christmas? The United States of America is one of the most religiously diverse countries in the world. America has more than 1,500 different religious bodies and 360,000 churches in the United States ("Protecting", 1996). The men that wrote the constitution knew that and made it clear that they should separate the government from religion to make sure that the nation stays that way. When do we know when to draw the line? Is it necessary to ban all of the schools from singing "Silent Night" during the holidays? Who decides on where to draw the line? The government has the first amendment to abide by. "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..." as it states. The fact that this Amendment to the Constitution of the United States makes every law passed having to do with this issue redundant. Yet the Amendment guarantees the relig

Ninety per cent of Americans believe in God; more than half say they pray at least once a day, and church membership has remained at the same level, 63 percent of the population, according to the Census Bureau, for more than thirty years ("Protecting", 1996). The diversity of all of these religions is unbelievable. No matter how hard we try to keep the rights of others to worship equal there will always be someone testing the limits of it. This could get messy though with all of the 1500 churches in the United States. I suggest that instead of displaying any type of religious scene or symbol they do something else. Like display something that celebrates the winter holiday such as a Christmas tree and/or a Santa Claus scene. The reason why our government has been established for over 200 years is the due to the fact that we do not relate our gove
