Report on Welfare

A father walks out on his wife and three small children. His wife has no job, and

no other source of income. How will she be able to feed and clothe her kids until she can

find a steady job? The welfare system can provide food and money for them. Ever since

the welfare system was started, it has been a God-send to millions of low income families

who needed its benefits to help them get on their feet.

In a free-market economy like the United States and most other nations, a certain

percentage of working age adults will always be unemployed. "Since we declared war on

poverty in 1965, this country has spent more than $3 trillion on our social welfare

system" (Tanner n.p.). Before the "New Deal" era of the Great Depression, most US

welfare programs were generally operated by state and local governments ("Welfare"

34). The modern US welfare system dates to the Great Depression of the 1930s. During

the worst parts of the Depression, almost one-fourth of the labor forces were

unemployed. Over two-thirds of all households would have been considered poor by

today's standards (adjusted for the increase in the value of the US dollar) (McCuen 17).
