Arthur Robert Ashe, Jr.Arthur Robert Ashe, Jr. was born on July 10, 1943 in Richmond, VA. He was the eldest child born. After him cam his brother John. Their parents Arthur Sr. and Mattie Ashe raised Arthur and John. Arthur Sr. worked as a police officer for the Richmond Recreation Department. Arthur's mother was a frail housewife that spent most of her time with him. Arthur would love to read and listen to music all day. After his mother's death, Arthur used to stare out the window and every day watch a man play a sport, but he didn't know what it was. He later realized it was called tennis. One day at the age of seven, Arthur picked up a racquet and a ball and went to the tennis court that said "Negroes Only". He did that everyday and with hard practice he became pretty good. At Baker Elementary School in Richmond, Arthur got all A's and B's and was the brightest student in his class. He graduated from Summer High School in St. Louis with the highest grade point average in his class. His excellent academic and tennis work earned him a scholarship to the University of California at Los Angeles. The was another one of Arthur's many accomplishments. Arthur's fourth accomplishment was marrying an NBC-TV photographer named Jeanne Moutoussany on February 20, 1977. IN 1983, Arthur had a heart attack. He underwent bypass surgery and needed a blood transfusion. Around 1988, Arthur felt a numbness in his right hand and he went to the hospital where he under went brain surgery. He had a brain infection called "toxoplasmosis" which indicated that he had AIDS. He got it from the blood transfusion in 1983.
