Whenever anybody thinks about fraternities and the parties that they throw, they automatically think about the movie Animal House. Animal House was a movie made in the 1970's about an out of control fraternity house that always got into trouble with the school. They would throw crazy parties every night of the week, and everybody in the house was an alcoholic. Now it is the end of the 20th century, and the fraternities of America are starting to change from the things that our fathers had started. Now, the universities of America are trying to clean up the act of all the fraternities. They are doing this by implementing a new program called Select 2000. This goal of this new program is to clean up fraternities' images, raise their grades, and participate more in the community. They think that this program will work, but the only thing that the program does is hurt the Greek system that is run by it.

Select 2000 started out with just four universities as pilot schools: Florida Southern, Northern Colorado, Villanova, and Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. These four universities were supposed to see how the program worked in the different Greek systems, and

I know from personal experience that Select 2000 has at least had a negative effect on Sigma Pi. We used to be known for being such a strong house on campus, and we still are, but the attitudes of my brothers and the pledges are down. I know that we still have a lot to look forward to in the next few years, but the pledges do not know what to think. They first started to think that being in the house was going to be a great time, but they are finding out that they have nothing

A lot of college students think that it is very hypocritical that the baby boomer generation who gave fraternities the bad name are now trying to take everything away from us. They rolled through nights with keg after keg of beer, and marijuana smoke billowing down the halls, and they brag about it. Now they are the college administrators and national fraternity association leaders. 5

Here at Southern Illinois, Select 2000 has had a very big effect on the whole Greek system, and it is still in tact. Since the start of the program, there has been one less chapter on this campus per semester. All of these chapter losses were in relation to the rules of Select 2000. Whether it was drinking related, or not meeting up to standards of the program, Select 200 is damaging an already weak Greek system.

Since the beginning of the semester, we have lost ten pledges. We started out with twenty-three, and we are down to thirteen. The thirteen that are left are having doubts about staying with it, too. This attitude is all over the campus of SIUC. They just don't see the point of it. This saddens everybody who is in a fraternity to see that the administration is going to get away with destroying the Greek system.
