The Raping of the Working Class
In the brutal and near forgotten times of the Neanderthal, the strong have ruled the weak. Even today in the animal world, the stronger species dominates the lesser, within the same species this hierarchy can also be found with the exception of humans of course, or maybe not. In this land where freedom and equality are touted around like a new father would his first born son, an infection has set in. This infection is eating away at the hearts of the working class stealing their ambition and robbing them of the drive to do a good job. This canker is called greed and is rooted in our so called equals, the wealthy. The upper class is only interested in becoming richer, they care nothing for the middle and lower class citizens. With the help of our government the upper class has become wealthier and wealthier to the point of obscenity; while the blood of America, the middle class, becomes anemic. The well off must be educated in this matter before it's too late, before the working man or woman has lost all incentive to make this country great, before a second revolution. Our elected representatives have become more engaged with re-election rather than making the lives of their constituency more fulfilling. Naturally, becoming a representative, senator, or even the president is a very proud moment for any citizen. Unfortunately to be elected to such an prestigious office takes massive amounts of money. Politicians can no longer make speeches from the backs of trains and hope to reach the voters. They need funds to run advertisements and campaign offices. Sadly, those most willing to donate these funds are large corporations. Donations from these corporations, however do not come without strings. Favors and votes that aid their companies are required if a donation is expected the next election year. Vice President Gore in the aforementioned address cited yet another finding by Time magazine. A survey conducted in 1965 questioned whether the government favored the wealthy and influential. Of those polled, 29 percent said yes. In an identical survey in 1994, 80 percent agreed that the government was favoring the rich and powerful (Cecil 198). Now even the government instilled by the working man is against him. Where can he turn for help now. In order for these changes in our country to be made, we as Americans must inspire our leaders to introduce laws to help the working class and to fill some of the tax loop-holes that corporations use. In a more level playing field, everyone would benefit from the stable economic conditions it creates. With global war becoming less of a threat this country needs to strive to be an economic superpower in addition to a military power. By doing this, America would prosper and again become the great nation it once was. workers. We must provide for our own way of life before we can contribute to the lives of others. With higher wages and better working conditions comes lowered crime, according to Dr. Robert Crutchfield of the University of Washington (Travis). This should seem obvious to everyone.
