Theology original sin and the fall of man
What we take from Original Sin and the Fall of Man The idea that God created our world, that God is perfect and good but the fact that evil still exists amongst us is something that is difficult to grasp but is necessary to realize. Why does evil exist? Why is there original sin in the 'perfect' world created by God? And probably most importantly, how do we expect to maintain a sense of faith in God with evil in the world? These questions are troubling to think about and difficult to understand because evil is not a pleasant thing by any means but something that we must acknowledge and deal with as Ware points out: "Suffering, our own and that of others, is an experience through which we have to live, not a theoretical problem that we can explain away. If there is an explanation, it is on a deeper level than words" (Ware, 57). Unsettling as this is, it is still something that we can try to understand and hope to learn from in the best manner possible. Perhaps it is best to first explain how original sin and the fall of man came to be, then to focus on what exactly evil is. As we know, Adam was the first that God created. He was placed in the Garden of Eden by God with specific instructions on what he is allow
It is from this that we decide how we shall act, will we follow God's lead and obey him, forming a bond of love, or will we fall to temptation as Adam did. So what does all of this mean? How did Adam fail? Well Adam's actions are a direct result of free will, which is a great gift from God. It is something important because without it, we would not have a world. God does not force us to obey him, to love him or to follow him, but he gives us the option to do so: "As a Trinity of Love, God desired to share his life with created persons made in his image, who would be capable of responding freely and willingly in a relationship of love...God took a risk: for with this gift of freedom there was given also the responsibility of sin" (Ware, 58-59). It is inevitable that the opportunity to deny God exists through free will, but it is also impossible to from a bond with God without without knowingly choosing to do so:" Without freedom there would be no sin. But without freedom man would not be in God's image; without freedom man would not be capable of entering into communion with God in a relationship of love" (Ware, 59). It is in this that we can see why God allowed Adam to fail, but at the same time why God's love is real and superior to all things. Out of avoiding evil and doing good can come yet another form of evil, somewhat hidden and masked by our intentions. We are to avoid evil because we want to do it out of love for God. However, sometimes we are pulled into falseness when we do good for recognition, to look good and to make ourselves feel better. This is wrong as things such as this should be done out of the kindness of our hearts. We are called to be unified and bonded with God, just as we are supposed to learn: "After the Fall, human history is a long shipw
