To Save the Whales we must save the Ocean, To save the ocean we must save the whales

To Save the Whales we must save the Ocean,

To Save the Ocean we must save the Whales

The whale populations around the world have plummeted since the late 19th and early 20th century. Some of these great animals have become extinct while others are in great danger of becoming extinct. The main culprit in their demise is man. Mankind, knowingly and unknowingly, have single handedly put this beautiful creatures at death's door. Human actions such as whaling, over-fishing, pollution and many others are killing these magnificent creatures to a point at which we do not know if they can recover. This being the case, humans are also the only hope these animals have in being saved; in doing so, we will in turn save the oceans as well as ourselves.

There are many reasons why these mammals should be saved. One is their right to live in and of it self; these and all animals do have rights. Many people ask the question "At what cost do the rights of animals outweigh the rights of man." This is a tough question but for every question there is an answer. Another point in preserving these animals is the genetic material of which they offer us. A lot of people do not understand how this could be beneficial to the

When whales are mentioned many people tend to think of the great whales, such as the humpback and the blue. However due to the great success of recent movies like "Free Willy" many people are learning about the smaller whales. Whales are collectively known as cetaceans but can be grouped into two separate categories. Toothed whales are named for their simple, peglike teeth, which vary considerably in number and size among the species. These teeth are primarily used for grasping and tearing rather than chewing. Some of the whales in the category are the Orca (Killer Whale) and all species of dolphins and porpoises. Baleen whales considered the "great whales". This species of whales have no teeth. They use baleen to filter their food out from the water. Baleen is composed of keratin, a protein that also makes up human hair and fingernails. These animals take in huge amounts of water containing food. The baleen then traps the food while the water is forced out of the mouth. (8)
