A detailed Summary of Why Political Thinking


Glenn Tinder, in his work Political Thinking; The Perennial Questions, writes that his objective is to provide "an impulse and sense of direction that will help a reader think about the political dilemmas of human existence and hence of all times rather than of our time alone," (p.9). Thus, he suggests that engaging in political thinking involves more than simply issues of the present. Political thinking enables people to reach answers that are otherwise unattainable. It also fulfills the need of humans to have ideas, whether or not they are correct. Lastly, political thinking enables people to gain humanity. Tinder proposes that political thinking is a worthwhile, and even imperative endeavor for these reasons.

To reach answers, one must think about the question or subject, including when the subject is politics. Therefore, political thinking enables people to discover a solution, which is not read


Finally, Tinder again brings up the point of civilized, as opposed to barbarous, life by stating that thinking facilitates humanity in people. Humanity he describes as compassion, the absence of contempt, and altruism. Without thought, the instinct for action and facts overpower the rationality and compassion that come with a higher enlightenment. Through political thinking, one may often learn about him or herself, and become a more feeling human being. To reflect on the self and other people allows the enhancing of one's humanity, which is a substantial benefit to the character. While briefly describing the relationship with God that may be elevated, Tinder recounts that thought, including political thought, seems to make one a better person.
