Women in Combat 3
Since the birth of our country, when they had basically no rights, women have been fighting for equality. The latest battle that women have engaged in is their right to participate in ground combat in the army and the marines. In recently written articles, Suzanne Fields and Lou Morano say that it is absurd to allow women to fight. They concede that there may be women who are qualified to fight, but observe that there are just too many down sides to granting women a right to fight. On the other side of the spectrum, James Dubik, Richard Lane, and Jay Wurts argue that women should be able to fight in ground combat. Each side has a valid argument, but on the whole, there are more points against women fighting in ground combat then there are for it. The first point against a women's right to fight is simply that men are physically superior to women. Feilds states "Women are held to different(i.e. lower) physical standards in training and the aren't expected to do the same heavy lifting as men, because they can't. Another issue is that women in the field may interfere with male bonding(Feilds 2). When men are fighting next to each other during a time of crisis, males seem to bond to unite against a common enemy. Having females in the field along side men, would, without a doubt, greatly interfere with, if not totally destroy, any male bonding that may occur.
