Youth 2

There are many stereotypes that society has placed on youth. Adults as well as other youths hold images in their heads that are not necessarily true about the different groups of teens. Rather than writing about youth as a whole, I found information about the different groupings that teenagers split themselves up into.

"Skinheads" are a common group that many male teens will follow. This gang victimizes racial, ethnical and sexual minorities. A "skinhead's" image is usually kept quite tough looking by shaving their head, wearing tight blue jeans or army style pants. It is also common to see them wearing a wife beater, a bomber jacket, red or white suspenders that hang loose and a pair of doc Martens or combat boots with white or red laces in them. The red and white laces or suspenders signify the fact that they are extreme racists. It is said that many "skinheads" come from homes of violence and oppression. Because of their abusive family background, most turn to this crowd for acceptance and/or comfort but are still vulnerable to violent behaviour. Drug use is quite often used to seek refuge with their problems.

"Gangsters" are another group that has a violent streak and looks to drugs and alcohol for a goo

Smoking drugs, enjoying the high and burning out constantly time after time is the life that a "stoner" leads. "Stoner's" crave the feeling of being high and will go as far as theft or prostitution to suppourt get that feeling. This type of person usually has a low self-esteem and bad background. A "stoner's" family is often abusive and the parents are usually heavy into the narcotics as well. They feel that getting high is a release to get away from all of their worries of life. Being well groomed and taking care of his or her body is not a top priority for a "stoner". It is as if they tend to go into their own world or their own state of being.

"Jocks" are the group of guys, not many girls, who are all in shape, work out at the gym and are obsessed with sports. They like to wear sport clothing like Adidas, Nike and Umbro. This group takes care of their physical appearance by wearing nice clothes and keeping neatly shaven. On the weekends, you can catch this group relaxing watching a sports game on TV or out drinking beer with their friends. Most "jocks" have jobs or their family tends to be well off. It is said that although this group has a lot of other talent they have very bad marks in school and are even characterized as "dumb jocks". "Jocks" do not normally socialize with the other groups except the "tarts".

d time. You can identify members by their gang colours, certain rituals or their ways of initiation. Criminal activities like stealing cars for joyriding, rival gang fights (sometimes resulting in death), rape and or other sexual behaviour. Vandalizing, illegal drug use and trade are some of the other "gangsters'" everyday hobbies. This group of teens is known to live in low-income city neighbourhoods and hanging out on street corners. Most gang members are classified as male high school dropouts. Not all gangs are considered by the above, characteristics of gang members and different gangs may differ by age, sex and ethnic groups. It is said that most "gangsters" have and unsta
