In Latin vocabulary, one word signifies virtue: its meaning is manly valor. Among the many men Pluarch wrote about Coriolanus stood out as being the most virtuous. He fought and thought for others and not himself. The worst example is Cato the Elder. Plutarch didn't like Cato, so he isn't well represented. Cato didn't like Greeks, and Plutarch was a Greek. I think Cato was a hypocrite according to Plutarch's writing.

Coriolanus was the most virtuous example in Plutarch's writings. Coriolanus' name was given to him after he conquered the town of Coroli. His given name was Marclus. He carried lots of virtuous qualities: courage, glory, bravery, and respect. He was so loved that when he lost a senate election, the winners felt humiliated instead if him. He always put his family first and then his country. He was a "mamas boy." He did everything he could to please his mother and this eventually leads to his downfall.

Coriolanus fought wars for land to grow food on, not just for the fun of winning. "Those who from time to time tested their powers against his in feats of courage and daring used to attribute their defeat to his immense physical strength which they found impossible to overcome and which no amount of exertion could wea

As all heroes do, Coriolanus suffered bad times in his life. He took a turn for the worse when he publicly denounces the senate. They had a trial and in turn added more charges. He was at first sentenced to death, but after the trial he was banished from Rome. He took no possessions or any requests, but just walked away. He decided to be revengeful, as most would, and joined Rome's enemy, the Volscians. He convinced them to renew their hatred and start a war with the Romans. Just on the brink of war, Coriolanus' mother along with other women marched into the Volscian camp. His mother came to convince, or to tell him rather, to cease the war. Upon seeing her he ran to embrace her and his wife and children. Since he loved his mother more than life, he gave into her pleads and led the Volscian army out of Roman territory. He gave up his pride to please his mother and that is pretty virtuous not counting all his other accomplishments.

Cato began to want wealth and started buying up various things like ponds or hot springs. His power took over his once "simple" life. He took land, cut off plumbing and put public land up for sale for outrageous prices. He acquired; lots of slaves during his rich times. "He treated them like beasts of burden, exploiting them to the limits of their strength, and then when they were old, driving them off and selling
