Islamic civilization was one of the largest of its time, it found a balance between military strength and spiritual enlightenment. Its influence is still felt in our modern culture and will be for years to come. Islamic civilization has gotten a bad rap over the years. One of the reasons is misinformation not only about the civilization but the religion that fueled it. "Much of the material about Mohammed is written either by Muslims who have repeated unfounded traditions about Him, or by hostile Occidentals. We are still victims of centuries of propaganda against Him. Dante, for instance, placed Mohammed and Imam 'Ali in the eighth circle, ninth pouch, of the Inferno. The Middle Ages called Him "Mahound" a word influenced by the English hound."1 The Islamic civilization started in 622 when Mohammed fled from Mecca to Medina with his followers. Mohammed in the following years took over Mecca and then Hejaz. After Mohammed had taken over Hejaz, delegates from all over Arabia came to declare their faith in Islam. One of the major accomplishments is the Koran. Enemies of Islam have said that Mohammed copied the Koran from Christian and Jewish Scriptures. This is would have been impossible Mohammed knew only Arabic, and the earliest arabic translation of the Bible were made centuries after His death. The Koran is divided in to 114 surihs which in turn are divided into verses. The Koran is one of the only holy books written by a Manifestation of God, it was written over 23 years. The verses were written on palm leaves, leather, stone, and the shoulder-blades of sheep. It was later gathered up by the Imam Ali, and made into the modern day Koran. Arabs historians were the first to write thing on a year to year bases. They then organized events around rulers, which is what most historians do today. Ibn Khaldun was the first to consider the influence of geography and climate on people. Between the 8th and 14th century was the heyday of the Islamic Civilization. Arab scholars preserved ancient knowledge that might have been lost, and also made many contributions to the world. Arabs excelled in medicine. They are the fathers of modern western medicine.
