Taoism is a religio-philosophical tradition that has, along with Confucianism, shaped Chinese life for more than 2,000 years. The themes and texts of philosophical Taoism became established during the Warring States period (481-221 BC). Religious or esoteric Taoism as a movement of organized religious communities developed only in the 2nd century AD, appropriating a variety of themes and spiritual techniques associated with the common objective of immortality. Most if asked, … “What is the most advanced religion of ancient times?”… Would respond with an animistic religion of the time, such as all of the Mesopotamian religions. In fact Taoism was clearly the most advanced religion of the ancient world. In my humble opinion rich and powerful men use the idea of religion to manipulate and control people within society, by giving answers to all their problems. Whereas in Taoist beliefs the Tao can only give you the questions, you must find your own answers, your path in life. Ancient religions of the time were all animistic and Taoism was not, it was a philosophy that is many times as advanced as any religion.
