Botticelli
The latter part of the 15th century was a turbulent time in Florence that brought forth some of the most memorable and timeless pieces of art known to the western world. Sandro Botticelli, through his elegant and idealized depictions of pagan, portrait, narrative and religious scenes left an indelible mark in art history during this transitional period. Botticelli executed one of his greatest works in his second depiction of the Lamentation over the Dead Christ in 1495. The reasoning and events that lead to the painting of the second Lamentation, its influence, iconography, as well as an in depth description of the painting it self will be presented. Botticelli's long and glorious career began in 1461, when he was sent by his father to train alongside master artist Fra Filippo Lippi . Botticelli assisted Lippi in many of his greatest works. Through his apprenticeship, Botticelli learned a variety of techniques that can be clearly seen throughout his work. His marvelous talents and personality earned him the status of being one of Lippi's favorite apprentices. He was trusted and admired more than any other student, as evidenced by Lippi's request that Botticelli train his only son, Filippino, upon his death1.
