The nature/nurture controversy refers to the relative roles of heredity (nature) and environment (nurture) in shaping human characteristics. Human behaviour is determined by heredity and the environment in which one lives. Heredity is what one inherits from his/her parents, whether it be physical or mental. So is the development of one's personality mapped out before their birth, thanks to their parent's genes, or is one's personality a result of their day to day experience?

Heredity is without a question a major factor in the development of people's personalities, for example, when observing a child in development one can easily point out the similarities in the personality between the child and parent, although social scientists may argue and say that our personalities are more learned than inherited.
