PRIMATES

A detailed Summary of PRIMATES

Steady loss of forests and hunting has made the primates the most imperiled mammal on the planet. Of the more than 200 species of primates, including gorillas, gibbons siamangs, and the orangutans, almost half face extinction, and nearly 20 percent more may soon reach threatened status. Only one species of primates are increasing in number: Humans.

Uncontrolled human population growth is to blame for the pate of the primates. Humans expand into new regions with no thoughts about their impact on the land and animals already living there. In Africa lies a third of the remaining rainforests, yet like all the other rain forests already lost forever, the land is being cleared for logging timber, large scale cattle ranching, mining operations, government road building and hydroelectric schemes, military operation, and subsistence agriculture of peasants and landless settlers. Sadder still, in many places the forest are burnt simply to provide charcoal to power industry in the area.

"While the total removal of natural habitat is clearly a major threat of many African forest primates, an analysis of survey data suggests that human predation tends to have a greater negative impact on primate population than does selective logging o

Orangutans, an ape of the Asian continent found is only on the island of Borneo and Sumatra. Once again the agriculture is the reason for the habitat loss of the Orangutans. Oil palm plantations are taking over much of the islands leaving little as well as non-productive forests for the Orangutans to inhibit. Logging is another reason for their endangerment, the workers of these logging camps are not supplied enough with food, and therefore hunt and eat the food which the forest can provide, namely the Orangutans. Logging roads also make accessibility easier for the poachers, who shoot mother orangutans and capture the babies. Baby orangutans are very desired pets in the Asian countries such as Taiwan where over 2,000 baby orangutans are said to have been sold as pets. Researchers estimate 6,000 mother were killed and 4,000 captured babies died to supply the 2,000pets, since only one-third of those captured survives (Berger, 1985).

In my research on the endangered Orangutans as well as the other apes. I found that the Human species is the only factor for the threat of their survival largely due to logging, agriculture, hunting and the il
