Rabies, or hydrophobia, is a disease caused by a virus that affects the central nervous system. It is often fatal if not treated. The virus is transferred by the bite of an infected animal or by it lick over an open wound. Rabies is present in the animal's saliva and travels along the nerves to the brain. Any warm blooded animal is capable of being infected by rabies. It is only common among animals such as bats, raccoons, foxes, and skunks. Domestic animals such as cats, dogs, and livestock can also contract the virus. Rabies is very rare in smaller animals such as mice, squirrels, chipmunks, and rats.
