Radium
Radium, one of the most radioactive elements on the periodic table, discovered by the famous Marie Curie, and used for treating cancer are some of the reasons why radium is a very well known element. I believe that it is one of the most interesting elements, although it is the only one I've studied. Radium was discovered by Marie Curie, Pierre Curie, and their assistant. They discovered it by crystallizing an ore called Pitchblende, which is an Uranium ore. When they discovered it in 1898 they gave it the name Radium which comes from the Latin word for ray, radi. Radium is a silvery white metal, although not commonly found as a metal. It belongs to the Alkaline Earth Metal group and has similar characteristics as Beryllium(Be #4), Magnesium(Mg #12), Calcium(Ca #20), Strontium(Sr
Radium, like lots of radioactive substances is used for treating cancer patients, radiation therapy. It also was used for luminous (glow-in-the-dark) paint. (Radium, when in dense quantities glowed in the dark). Some time after that use, it was discovered that Radium was radioactive after many of the workers got sick and died. U-238(4.47E9 years)->U-234(247,000 years)->Th-230(75400 years)->Ra-226(1600 years)->Rn-222(3.82 days)->Po-218(3.1 minutes)->Pb-214(27 minutes)->Pb-210(Stable). As you can see by that, radium turns into Radon, then Polonium, and finally settling at Lead.
