What do you think of when you hear the word "rocket"? You probably think Space Shuttle, Apollo 13, Neil Armstrong maybe. What is a rocket? A rocket is an engine designed to propel itself into the air at high speeds. A rocket engine can produce more power than anything its size. In fact, a rocket the size of car can produce almost 2500 times more power than a car's engine. A rocket works on a very simple principle. Sir Isaac Newton, in the late 1600's, discovered three laws of motion. These laws helped lay down foundations of modern rocketry. The third law is most important to rockets. Thos law states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Here's an example: When a gun is fired the bullet shoots out of the barrel going one direction. At the same time the gun recoils in the other direction. Since the gun is heavier it accelerates slower than the bullet, which is an example of Newton's second law of motion. At the end of the 19th century a Soviet Union schoolteacher, Konstatin Tsiolkovsky, proposed the idea of using rockets for space exploration. Neil Armstrong and Dave Scott had just completed the first space docking in history, when problems arose. Gemini 8 was shaking violently while it was docked with an Agenda rocket. The Gemini was ordered to eject the rocket and return home immediately. This was the first time United States nearly lost a mission. Since the test grounds near Berlin were too small to continue the experiments, a larger facility was built in northeastern Germany on the Baltic Sea. With Braun as the technical director, liquid fuel rockets and jet-assisted takeoffs were successfully demonstrated, along with the demonstrations of the ballistic missile A4, or V2 (which stands for Vengeance Weapon 2). By 1944 the level of technology used in Braun's rockets and missiles was many years ahead of what was available in the United States. At the end of WWII, von Braun, Dorberger, and the entire rocket development team surrendered to United States troops. Within half a year von Braun and about 100 of the German rocket development team were at White Sands New Mexico to build, test, and launch captured V2's for high-altitude research for the U.S. government. At the end of the war the United States entered the field of guided missiles with practically no previous experience.
