Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) or better known as crib death, is the sudden death of an obviously healthy infant between 2 weeks and 1 years of age, due to unknown causes. About 95 percent of all cases occur between 2 and 4 months of age. This syndrome is responsible for at least 7,000 infant deaths annually in the United

States. SIDS occurs more frequently in male infants, particularly premature babies, infants born to mothers who had narcotic drugs during pregnancy, infants of parents who smoke, and infants with recent respiratory infections.

SIDS is a medical disorder that remains a mystery despite 30 years of intense research. Medical histories and autopsies reveal no apparent causes for the deaths but it obviously occurs during the night while the infant is sleeping.

A baby's sleeping positions, bedding, even the milk he/she drinks, all have guidelines parents are supposed to follow. By placing your infants on its back or side you can reduce the risk of SIDS. Doing this for the first four to six months (which is when

researchers have not found any evidence that a waterbed has caused some cases of SIDS.

SIDS occurs) can reduce the risk by 50 percent.

A review from a coroner's records show that 151 deaths were blamed on SIDS. At least 71 of the victims were found sleeping on a bed or couch, a danger even when the infant is sleeping alone. Infants heads, because of the lack of support can easily be trapped or wedged in between the wall or headboard of a bed. Of those 71 cases 33 of the deaths involved the infant sleeping with an adult or older child, which the older person probably suffocated the baby by overlaying. In eight of those 71 cases the infant was sleeping on a waterbed, which most Pediatricians ruled very unsafe.

In conclusion, the actual cause of SIDS is still unknown (and opinions very widely), a number of research projects involving exp
