Comparing Athenian and Spartan Governments
In 500 BCE the government in Greece was just starting to form. The Athenian government was direct democracy. A democracy is when citizens can make decisions about the way that the government is run. The Spartan government was an oligarchy. An oligarchy is a government in which power is in the hands of a select few. Comparing the governments of the two main Greek city-states, Athens and Sparta, I would prefer to reside in Athens.In Athens, every adult male over the age of eighteen could speak and resolve problems, vote on every idea proposed, be part of the Ecclesia (Assembly), and stand for public office.
