Walter Sullivan, a veteran science reporter, received a phone call from Times headquarters saying that the Soviets had successfully launched a "Sputnik". The Russian name for satellite, Sputnik, became the name for the first space program. They had beaten the U.S. astronauts into space. It was a big humiliation even though the U.S. launched its own sattelite, Explorer I, four months later. Both Sputnik and Explorer were launched and before this 18 month year was over,
