The Sun

A detailed Summary of The Sun

There are many facts about the sun. The total volume is around 1,300,000 times the earth. The temperature is 10,000 F on the surface and 27,000,000 F in the center. The sun is approximately 4,600,000 years old. The diameter is 865,000 miles about 109 times the diameter of the earth. The rotation period is about every one month. The sun is made up of various types of gases. It is held together by its own gravity. The light that is produced by the sun is due to nuclear burning in its core. The whole sun itself is located in the center of the Solar System.

There are other facts about the sun.

Many people have made dicoveries of the sun. In 1611 Gallileo discovered dark sunspots on the sun. George E. Hale discovered in 1908 that sunspots have strong magnetic fields. There are many sunspots on the sun. A typical sunspot has a magnetic field strength of 2,500 gauss, the earth's magnetic field has a strength of less than 1 gauss.

The photosphere of the sun is the top layer of the convection zone. It

temperature is about 2,000,000 F. The convection zones

is about 340 miles thick and the temperature is about 10,000 F. The photosphere is from one millionth to one ten

millionth as dense as water on earth. It gives off the suns energy in the form of heat and light.

There are many other facts about the sun. Some of which include: about 3/4 of the mass of the sun consists of of hydrogen, the known element. A fourth of the suns mass consists of helium. Scientists discovered helium on the sun before they made the discovery on earth. Enough hydrogen is left in the sun's core to last only another 5 billion years. As the fuel is exhausted the sun will change. As the outer layers expand to the orbit of the earth or beyond the sun will become a red giant star. Slightly cooler at the surface and 10,000 times brighter it will remain a red giant star for half a billion years. It will then shrink to a dwarf star and slowly cool for several billion years. The sun will continue to be a source of energy for anoth
