Tornadoes 2

Tornadoes are one of the most devastating forms of mother nature. These unpredictable storms inflict a great amount of damage on whatever they come across. These storms mysteriously appear across the US and put fear in the hearts of many.

Tornadoes are large violent storms that come down from cumulonimbus clouds. This mass of swirling clouds can range from a few meters to a kilometer at the bottom. The whirling wonder is only visible because of the dust that is sucked from the ground as well as condensation from nearby water. The storms generally spin counterclockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern hemisphere, but like I said before these storms are unpredictable and at times this does not apply. These massive storms can reach wind speeds of 480km/h (~300 mph) and some are predicted to spin at 800km/h (~500 mph). As they move along the ground they leave a path of destruction. Tornadoes destroy buildings, motor vehicles, and anything else they come across that weighs 30,000 pounds or less. A man by the name of Theodore Fujita invented a tornado scale. This scale measures tornadoes cause.

Rating Wind in Meters per second Damage

Ratings of F-1 and F-2 only damage windows and roofs on buildings while F-3 destroys walls, F-4 damages whole houses, and F-5 blows away what is left of the buildings. Meteorologists have no way of predicting the intensity of a storm. Dr. Wurman, a storm chaser, says, "We just know the tornadoes coming; we don't know whether it is an F-0 or a F-5." This can not be determined until the tornado "Touches down" or makes contact with the ground. There is no real place to hide from a F-5 tornado. Mobile homes and cars take the brunt of most storms, but even a house will be destroyed by the awesome power of tornadoes.

On April 3, 1974 a huge green blob, in the shape of a six, came on a Doppler radar screen in Cleveland. This green blob turned into a tornado which wiped Xenia, a nearby town, right off the map. Hours after the tornado hit rescuers came to the seen. After surveying the trail of destruction 5000 people were found injured and 330 were proclaimed dead. This is only one example of the mass destruction caused by tornadoes. Recently in Moore, Oklahoma a tornado touched down. On May 3, the tornado started its path of destruction and leveled this unsuspecting city. Hundreds were killed and thousands injured as this storm passed through Oklahoma. The city was leveled and everything was left in ruins. Now millions of dollars have to be spent t
