Tourette syndrome

The neurological disorder, Tourette syndrome, is characterized by multiple motor and vocal tics. Tics are often described as involuntary, rapid, repetitive movements of functionally related groups of skeletal muscles in one or more parts of the body.

In 1885, Georges Gilles de la Tourette published the first detailed description of Tourette syndrome. A child will normally develop an eye blink, or head tic either side to side or back and forth between the ages of two and fifteen, usually at about the age of seven. Other tics are added to the existing symptoms or replace them within a few months. Although the tics that begin are usually muscular, vocal ti
