Weight Loss
A major controversy that has many nutritionists and scientists at war with each other is how to lose weight. There are quite a number of possible factors that are argued that cause weight gain. Among them are the basics: (in no specific order) eating too much fat, calories or carbohydrates. Another more recent approach to weight loss is to simply swallow diet pills, which involves no willpower whatsoever. These theories have been debated heavily for years now, and many people have gone back and forth trying to find the diet that is right for them. Regardless, it is an important issue, as many Americans would do almost anything to lose weight, due to the media's glamorizing thin models and the overall nationwide focus on good health. It is my objective to clarify the issues, state the pros and cons of each diet, and present my own opinion and the logic behind it. Since the 1960's, Americans have been told that the more that they cut down on fat the better it is for their overall health, and that this diet will result in weight loss. The theory is very simple and easy to digest (no pun intended)- you are what you eat. By eating less fat no doubt your body's fat content will diminish. Over the years, more and more America
Another area which high fat diets can affect is heart disease and cholesterol levels. A recent study conducted by Dr. Rober H. Knopf showed that reducing total fat from 35 percent of calory intake to 30 percent was as effective as diets with less total fat. As a matter of fact, when the amount of calories from fat was reduced to 20 percent of total calory intake, heart protective HDL cholesterol (or good cholesterol) levels dropped and triglyceride levels (which damage the heart) rose. There is growing evidence that many fats can actually be good for you. Obviously, a certain amount of fat in the diet is neccessary, as dietary fat transports the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. However, new research suggests that even beyond that there are many fats that are essential to keeping people. People are looking at the mediterranean diet, which is high in vegetables, fish and olive oil, and how it keeps people healthy. Studies in Spain, Sweden, Greece, Italy and the United States showed that a diet higher in olive oil reduced the risk of breast cancer. Another study, published in the May issue of Neurology magazine, found that a high intake of extra virgin olive oil was associated with preservation of cognitive function in healthy elderly people. However, the naysayers are many, and they have a lot to say. These dissenters claim that the only reason that weight is lost on this diet is because people cannot endure eating these proteins such as meats and eggs constantly, and therefore end up eating less. Also, they argue, most people will end up cheating on any diet, and, in this case they will regain everything right back almost immediately. During this state of ketosis, substances called ketones accumulate in the blood, causing such symptons as bad breath, constipation, nausea and lightheadedness. Also, there are almost no nutrients entering the body during this diet, which is obviouslly harmful (Dr. Atkins recommends taking supplements). Drs. Kevin Vigilante and Mary Flynn, both of Brown University, write in their book: "The Atkins diet is potentially so dangerous that the Surgeon General should probably put a warning on every book that Dr. Atkins sells. The diets only salvation is that people can't tolerate it long enough for the increase in the risk of heart disease or cancer that long term use of such a diet could bring." The theory behinfd the book written by Dr. Barry Sears (Enter the Zone) is that insulin insensitivity is the cause of obesity when people eat a diet rich in starchy foods and sugars. However, at the same time, biochemists will tell you that it is obesity that causes insulin insensitivity, not the other way around. Therefore, the majority of nutritionists would agree that most low carbohydrate diets are to be avoided, despite there being no long term research done on the matter. There are many books on the marke
