Should whales and dolphins be taken into captivity from their natural homes? When you see an animal in the wild it's special. When you see one in captivity it takes away the fun of even seeing that animal. When whales and dolphins are taken into captivity it isn't always as fun for them as it seems at the Sea World shows and places like that. I'm going to take you behind the scenes of whales and dolphins in captivity.
When many whales are first taken into captivity some will show signs of distress, including, thrashing and banging their heads against the walls. When whales are taken into captivity their dorsal fin flops over. Nobody knows why this happens, but it only happens in captivity. These whales' dorsal fin will never stand up straight again after they are taken into captivity one time.
Whales aren't the only sea animals that are captured from the wild and taken into captivity. Dolphins are also captured and put into these tanks
to become apart of the aquarium's "collection". The Shedd Aquarium captured three dolphins in 1993 and kept them in a shallow tank for what they called acclimation. The dolphin's distress calls could be heard at night . These three dolphins were starved until they would eat dead fish thrown in by the trainers. Fifteen months later, the male was found dead at the bottom of the aquarium.
When these animals are brought into the aquarium the tanks aren't checked as well as they should be sometimes. There have been cases where the tanks were infected with a virus. The tank became infected by the virus when they found a dolphin stranded on the beach, and this dolphin was infected with this virus. The aquarium didn't know that this dolphin had the virus at the time, so they took her into the tank. The dolphin died shortly after the capture, from the virus. The tank wasn't cleaned well enough before the next capture so those dolphins got the virus as well, and they also died short
