Why are people left handed

The purpose of this paper is to inform the reader about left-handedness. I will explain some disadvantages and advantages to being left-handed. I will tell about the many ways that researchers think people become left-handed. I will also tell how a left-

handed person uses their brain to function the left-hand.

Many people have thought of left as bad. The French word for left is "gauche", this word also describes a clumsy person. The word "right" has been associated with good and correct in words such as "righteous". Another example would be when, in the bible, God sorts his flock. He blesses the sheep by putting them on his right side. Then God punished the goats by putting them on his left side. This made left-handedness suspicious to people.

Around eight-five to ninety percent of all people favor their right hand over their left. Ten to fifteen percent are left-handed or can use both hands equally. Why isn't the ratio closer to 50/50? Researchers say that the ratios use to be much closer. About

200,000 years ago, over thirty percent of the population used their left hands. (1)

From 1932 to 1970 left-handedness, in the U.S., rose from two percent to ten percent. About ten percent of the population has a

The brain has two hemispheres, which are connected by nerves to the opposite side of the body. The right side of the brain controls the left side of the body, and vise versa. This is being cross-wired. In lefties, the right side of the brain learns most of the manual skills and controls the left hand to do them. The brain's dominant half is what determines most people's hand preference for life. This is why when a child is told to change which hand they

The researchers say that the injuries may stem from structural brain differences between the right-handed and the left-handed children. The injuries might also be because of the environment, such as doorknob placement and other designs favoring safety for right-handed children. The researchers aren't for sure if these injuries are because of biology and/or the environment.

Lefties are also at a higher injury risk. Researchers looked at 267 children brought into the emergency room for accidental injuries. The children were brought in for cuts, bruises, sprains, fractures, and other injuries. The researchers also studied another 496 children that came in for non-accidental emergencies, such as respiratory problems. These studies were over a ten-week period. The researchers found that left-handed children were nearly twice as likely, than right-handed children, to be injured. The lefties had also been hospitalized more often for injuries. They were also more apt to be described as clumsy by their parents. (6)

Left-handedness could also be hereditary. The researchers think that handedness and brain lateralization are controlled by two genes. One gene, they believe, determines which hemisphere will control language. The other determines whether the hand, that hemisphere controls, will be on the opposite or same side.

For left-handed adults and teens, driving is also set up for right-handed peo
