All of the characters in John Steinbeck's novel Of Mice and Men did not have a good relationship with one another. George and Lennie were the opposite as these other men. The bunkhouse men did not have any respect for each other and did not care about each other. Sometimes they were insensitive and did not care if they really were or not. Some thought the employer was pretty nice and the others do not really say anything about him probably because they knew little about him . The characters were afraid of socializing because of quitters.
There is plenty of evidence that the characters had no care for each other and were insensitive. One example was when Carlson shot Candy's dog. That dog was Candy's best friend since it was a pup. Carlson said it was old and it stank and wanted to shoot it just because of the smell. Slim did not say anything against this and Carlson shot it. He came back and cleaned his gun in front of Candy. No one did anything about this so they are all alike because no one tried to stop Carlson form killing
Like Curly's wife said, all of the men in this novel are scared to become friends like George and Lennie are. They are afraid that if they become too close to one another one of them can leave and then the other's heart will be broken. They are also afraid that something can happen to the others like what happened to George Lennie. George had to get rid of him so he didn't get in any more trouble. Some are scared of their boss and they do not say anything about him unless it is good kind of like the old swamper said. This is the main reason why all of the guys in the bunk house are all so alone and have nothing to care about or appreciate.
When George and Lennie first came in they did not think very good things about the boss. The boss thought George and Lennie were strange because they came in together. Then Candy said to them that he was really a pretty nice person. Candy said this because on Christmas the boss game them a gallon of whisky. I do not think this is nice because that is too little for the many men in the bunk house.
