I want a divorce. These words are constantly heard on television, books

and households. In the past centuries, marriage was considered sacred and

divorce was a taboo that everyone avoided. To consider divorce was considered an irresponsible behavior. It was considered one's duty to remain in a marriage. Along with this duty towards one's family included the strong belief to maintain the family unit in the best interest of the children. Society expected a married couple to live as one once they made their vows to be faithful "in sickness and in health till death do us part". Consequently, most couples chose to spend the rest of their lives with someone that they no longer loved, rather than deal with what society had to say. They feared the social rejection that would result for getting a divorce. In today's society, however, it seems as if divorce is just a way of life: one in every two marriages ends up in divorce. When two people love each other they want to protect each other; however, often times we are unable to do so. Money, on the other hand, is able to give us this sense of protection. At times the reason couples choose to divorce is due to a poor sexual relationship. The socially acceptable way of having sex is in a marriage. Outside of a marriage, a sexually promiscuous person is seen as immoral or irresponsible. One of the human rights, rights of sexual possession, states that husband and wife have the right to sexual intercourse with each other, other outside parties do not. If violation occurs, the adulterers can be taken to court. Media today reflects society's leniency towards sexual promiscuity. One of the most profitable means of selling a product is through advertisements with sexual innuendos. Sexual promiscuity has lessened the significance of marriage. With the attitude that having multiple sexual partners are acceptable, marriage fidelity no longer seems as sacred.
