European Fears Lead to Native Culture Destruction.

A historian once said, "Neither the Spanish nor the English respected Indian culture and society: this lack of respect enabled them to destroy Native American life with few regrets." After studying this era in time one may come to the conclusion that the above is correct. English and Spanish explorers disrespected Native Americans because of their "savage" like behavior. This "savage" like behavior would include the natives material culture, religious culture, and social culture.

When the Europeans first began exploration of territories unknown, due to current beliefs they could not accept the aspects of Native Americans material culture. They did not except this material culture because land was viewed much differently in Europe. Natives viewed land as, "having sacred qualities and should be held in common"(pg. 7) Meaning that land was not any one persons possession. In Europe, land represented wealth and a belonging to an upper class elite. This differen


Now that Europeans have labeled the above three items as being "savage" like what is savage. According to the Webster's New World Dictionary, savage is defined as, " not civilized; primitive." This leaves a question as to who holds the authority to decide whether or not the Indians were savages?? Obviously the Europeans felt that they did but may it be possible that the Indians were not exposed to the technological advances that made Europeans modern? Might it be the fear of the cultural difference that threatened the existence of the new European nation? What ever the answers maybe one thing is for sure when the Spanish and English explorers began to exploit the natives for what ever reason they clearly did not respect their culture. So when the historian states, "Neither the Spanish nor the English respected Indian culture and society: this lack of respect enabled them to destroy Native American life with few regrets." They are correct.
