Stereotypes are commonplace in every society. Often times these

stereotypes are hateful and made to degrade another race, creed, or any other

group of people. These statements are very general and include the entire group

without exemption to the individuals in that group. For example, the statement

that all Irish people are drinkers is inaccurate because not all Irish people drink.

Though the generalization is made. In the film American History X, we see many

anti-Semitic stereotypes as well as anti-black statements. This is a story not of

hate though, it is one of realization. The main character Derek Vineyard, is

changed from his neo-nazi status into a more tolerant person, after going through

the jail system and actually interacting with members of the black race. He see's

through his own personal experience that blacks are people too and are no

different than himself. This breaks the stereotypes that he has been fed. His

predisposition to blacks is changed just as fast as it was implemented.

A stereotype is only as strong as the people who believe them. A

statement towards blacks or Jews is only strong if there are people that believe it.
