Broken Families
The most recent statistics show that half of all marriages end in divorce. While this statistic has been highly disputed, the simple fact that divorces have become common place is true. Marriages are often begun without any intent of a long term commitment. The divorce rate has risen exponentially as has child crime. While there may not be a direct connection between the two, broken marriages often create children with emotional disorders and feelings of inadequacy. Often the children of broken marriages feel that they are the cause for the breakup of their parents. Divorces and separations often place the children in single parent homes. While that alone is not harmful, most single parents must work often to provide enough money for their children. This usually means that the children do not spend as much time with their parents as they should, and this often leads to a child or children that feel isolated from and forgotten by their parents. The narrator of "Spikes," Kohn, watched as his family dissolved around him. After his baby died, he became removed from his wife. She then left. He appears to miss the feeling of contentment that having a family brought him. He comes across Bengt who is hitting his father's pennies into a Honda Civic. After discovering whose pennies Bengt is hitting, Kohn grabs his arm rather coarsely and begins to scold the boy, but he catches himself and is unsure what caused the outburst. Perhaps it is because of Bengt's disdain for a life that Mr. Kohn misses dearly. Bengt is also from a 'broken family' not because of divorce, but because of death. Bengt's father died in some form of accident, the story really doesn't specify. Bengt seems to be searching for a father figure. A recurrent theme among broken marriages is the desire of the children to put the parents back together. While this is a natural reaction to the situation, it often creates more problems. If the attempts do not work, the children often become despondent and become generally pessimistic about life. So while broken families and failed marriages may be part of human nature, they can be emotionally devastating to the children involved. That is why divorces based on simple problems should be caught by a counselor, and why marriages between people that are based on platonic relationships between two individuals should be closely analyzed prior to the actual marriage. There may be no way to completely eliminate broken families or divorces, but every effort should be made to reduce the current statistics. Plato, in Rebel without a Cause, was emotionally crippled by his parents' separation. With no clear role-models, Plato had no clear sense of right and wrong. You first meet his character in the police station where he is being held because he shot several puppies. In a very short time, Jim Stark becomes the central figure in Plato's life. As Jim gets closer to Judy, Plato wants to use them as his parental role-models. After Jim and Judy leave Plato as he is sleeping, Plato seems to have an emotional flashback to when is parents left him. Plato once again loses any clear sense of right and wrong. When the police become involved, Plato injures an officer. He then runs and hides in the planetarium. In the end, Plato is killed by the police.
