Broken Families 2

The most recent statistics show that half of all marriages end in divorce. While this statistic has been highly disputed, the simple fact that divorces have become common place is true. Marriages are often begun without any intent of a long term commitment. The divorce rate has risen exponentially as has child crime. While there may not be a direct connection between the two, broken marriages often create children with emotional disorders and feelings of inadequacy. Often the children of broken marriages feel that they are the cause for the breakup of their parents. Divorces and separations often place the children in single parent homes. While that alone is not harmful, most single parents must work often to provide enough money for their children. This usually means that the children do not spend as much time with their parents as they should, and this often leads to a child or children that feel isolated from and forgotten by their parents. The 'broken family' is a problem in modern society as is evident in "The Impossible to Kill Me Game," 'Spikes," The Saskiad, Rebel without a Cause, and personal experience.

Ron, in the "Impossible to Kill Me Game", is emotionally distraught and th

Personally, my parents' divorce had a drastic effect on my life. Had they not divorced, I would never have moved to Florida, and therefore would not be attending Nova. While I cannot be sure what my life would have been like had they stayed married, I know that their constant, childish, bickering has affected my life. If nothing else, it had made me a more diplomatic person. When I was fifteen, my brother and I were placed in a decision where we had to choose between our parents, a decision no child should ever have to make. Partly due to mistakes I made at the time and partly due to the magnitude of the decision, I ended up hurting my father. The decision was flawed, there was no way that I could please everyone, although I did try. If anything, my parents' divorce had made attempt to, as the expression goes, 'please all of the people all of the time'. While I know that it really cannot be done, I still try, and this often creates more problems. In the end, it seems that the only person whose feelings I am not worried about is me. By contrast, my brother has taken a completely different attitude toward life. While I try to maintain communication between our parents, he seems to want to end it entirely. He does not attempt to appease either party. In fact, he avoids getting between our parents when ever possible.

The problem of failed marriages and 'broken families' is not something that can easily be corrected. Its cause lies in human nature, how opinions, loves, and personalities change over time. The problem also stems from the current social perception that marriage is not permanent, that the 'contract' of marriage is not binding and can be broken at anytime. When parents separate, the child is often left with many conflicting emotions. This conflict is often exaggerated by one parents' attempt to put down the other. While the child loves both parents, he or she is often exposed, through the words of the other parent, to the weaknesses and failings of their parents. While most children will look upon their parents as almost God-like figures, a child of a broken home often feels that neither parent is the perfect role-model. These conflicting emotions usually have a lasting effect on the child. Many become untrusting while others become uncaring. There overall character is drastically effected by their parents differences. Without clear role-models, my children grow up with a warped since of right and wrong. While the divorce rate will never be zero, nor should it be, it can be lowered through a combination of marriage counseling and social enlightenment. Some sta
