Hansel and Gretel
Submissive, gentle, kind, loving, sweet, obedient, docile are all words that society has come to know and agree upon when it comes to describing a woman. This was especially true during the time Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm were writing their famous tale of "Hansel and Gretel." However, regardless of these stereotypical definitions brothers Grimm took upon themselves to invent a brand new one. The women in their story have a dominant, independent, authoritative, and in a way a deceitful character. At first they mask themselves in a cloak of disguise, yet their true nature is soon revealed. Stepmother is a woman who has married one's father after the death or divorce of one's real mother. An evil stepmother, on the other hand, has a quite a bit of an attachment that comes along with the original definition. She usually marries for money, exploits her husband in every way possible and always tries to get rid of anything that stands between her and what she wants. This usually means taking advantage of her stepchildren or simply disposing of them. In the tale of "Hansel and Gretel" the stepmother fits perfectly the definition of a sadistic, evil one.
