Heroes have been around since the beginning of time. The first hero that I can think of is David, from the biblical story David and Goliath. Heroes have not really evolved that much since the early days, they are still basically the same strong characters with inhuman like powers normal mortals can't even comprehend. Heroes come in many shapes and sizes. Contrary to popular belief, I think real heroes are just regular people who overcome grave dangers the average person never has to encounter.
