Ben Franklin was born on January 17, 1706 in Boston Massachusetts. He was one of the greatest American minds of all times. People thought that it seemed unlikely that Benjamin would succeed in becoming a model of the American dream. Benjamin's father, Josiah, pulled him out of school and made Ben help him in trade, only because he did not do well in arithmetic. Gaining very little satisfaction, Josiah decided to apprentice his son in the printing business, considering his son's admiration for reading. James, Benjamin's older brother, had already established himself as a printer by the age twenty-one. Recognizing an opportunity, Josiah had Benjamin sign his indentures in 1718. A list of Benjamin Franklin's inventions reveals a man of many talents and interests. It was the scientist in Ben that brought out the inventor. His natural curiosity about things and the way they worked made him try to find ways to make them work better. Ben had bad vision and needed glasses but he got tired of taking them off when he had to look at things up close. So he figured out a way to see things both far away and close up. He had two pairs of spectacles cut in half and had half of each lens put into a single frame, which today is called bifocals.

Ben's personal ideas about the economy helped shape our country's economy. We are lucky that he did because Franklin believed that the only true way to wealth was through hard work.
