socrates
Socrates was a distinguished, well-known philosopher. Throughout his life, he taught that there was only one righteous path. His goodwill and virtuous actions led to the nature of his wisdom being question. He could not get many people to see and understand things from his point of view. Furthermore, their ignorance was the ultimate cause of his death. In this essay I will trace his philosophical vocation from the Oracle at Delphi to his death. My primary focus will come from the Apology. The nature of Socrates' wisdom in a sense, was the root of evil, (evil meaning, the negative responses and feedback that he received from his peers) for he had gained unpopularity due to the claim of the Oracle at Delphi. The Oracle claimed that no one was wiser than Socrates was. However, Socrates believed that he was not wise at all, so he set out to disprove the prophecy. Day in and day out, he went to those who were presumably wise from different walks of life and occupations and examined them. He asked them several questions that eventually led to them being exposed. This "exposure" will be explained in more detail later in the essay. Interrogation is the technique that Socrates used to point out the ignorance of his fellow At
Socrates also discovered that they focused more on caring for their body than their soul. In Phaedo, it is said that to have "pure knowledge, [one] must escape from the body and observe matters in themselves with the soul by itself." One must separate themselves from the goods and services that distract them. henians. Socrates felt as though that by doing this he was assisting the gods. Likewise, Socrates thought that at he same time he would learn something. In reality his actions welcomed a lot of enemies. I think that the people came to dislike Socrates because they felt put down. From experience, when I engage in a debate, most of the time, I walk away from it upset. This happens because I think that I know what I am talking about, and my opponent thinks the same: both of us cannot be correct. I understand how Socrates' listeners felt. In their case, I believe it was simply a misunderstanding. Furthermore, I think that Socrates' could have avoided all of this confusion by approaching the problem in a different way. Socrates' ultimate goal was to prepare his peers for death. In addition, philosophy was preparation for death. Before arriving at death, one had to care for himself to the fullest extent that he could care. Socrates did not speak publicly. Instead, he went to individuals privately. He had to lead a private life because he did not have the free time to engage in public affairs to any extent. Moreover, he did not have the time to look after his own life. He lived a life devoted to the service of the gods. While talking to his peers, Socrates urged them to change their life style. He made them aware of the importance of living a virtuous and philosophic life. Socrates believed that knowledge was attainable, but in his view, the only real knowledge is that which the student attains himself with the active use of his own mind. Once one has attained the knowledge of virtue, then, according to Socrates, one cannot help but be virtuous.
