Reflections on Discrimination

Discrimination comes in many shapes and forms. Age, sex, ethnicity, color, sexual orientation, and social status are a few of the many ways people can be discriminated against. The two major discrimination issues that people are most familiar with are racism and hate crimes.

Racism is a problem that plagues everyone; Racism does not discriminate. Racism is part of everyone's life in one way or another, whether they recognize it or not. Of the people that do recognize there is a problem, they do not realize how severe it is. The problem of racism needs to first be addressed and acknowledged before it can be solved, or even improved. One of the extreme examples of the effects of racism on a community is hate crimes. Every person in the United States has experienced a hate crime first hand, heard about one on the news, or read about one in the newspaper. A hate crime is defined as a crime against persons or property motivated in whole or in part by racial, ethnic, religious, gender, sexual orientation, and other prejudices. Racially motivated hate crimes have been a major problem in the United States in the past few years. According to CNN News in 1998 alone, 4,170 hate crimes were racially motivated (Barrett). This number is rising at an alarming rate every year. Hate crimes can be anything from assault and battery, to vandalism, to threats that involve bias indicators - pieces of evidence li
