The Cost of Living Evaluation
India is now ranked third in the dam-building industry. Arundhati Roy feels that by the government producing these numerous dams, it is destroying the people of India. The purpose of these dams is to better irrigation, power production, flood control, and mainly bring drinking water to millions of the Indian people. Along with these "benefits", however, come homeless, dying people. Building these dams creates less land for people and takes away the land that people live on and rely on for food and money. On the topic of nuclear weapons, Roy is very much against them. India has successfully become a nuclear country, and Roy feels that India has not moved up in the world because of this advance in weaponry. Because of the success of the nuclear bomb, she feels that nuclear weapons are equal to a cry for death. Her arguments are very much convincing because of her adamant stand in her views. She presents facts and along with that, her detailed opinions and emotions about each topic.I agree with her attitude on dam building in India. She states that even t
Roy's biggest strength in her arguments is the great amount of facts and information she utilizes to support her opinions. She also uses a lot of emotion. For example, she includes personal stories of people affected greatly by dam projects, such as Bhaiji Bhai, for sympathetic reasons. Her greatest weakness is her disorganization of the facts. If she organized her defense more, instead of throwing out statistics randomly, readers would be able to follow her arguments easier, and in turn, be able to agree with her more on each subject. Also I think she should have included more of the "enemy's" arguments to react with her own. Another thing that I didn't think helped out much was her racism, which was revealed in the essay about nuclear weapons. When she is describing the nuclear weapons, she says, "Whiter than any white man that ever lived. The very heart of whiteness." (Roy p. 101) If she wanted to win more followers, she should have left this very biased remark out of her essay. hough these dams have been built, "one fifth of [Indian] population --- 200 million people --- does not h
