The following is a reaction to the material The Search for Meaning presented by Dr. Kang-nam Oh. I will be show positives and negatives about the material. I will also state my personal reactions throughout followed by a conclusion. The first chapter What is Meant By Religion? is an excellent introduction to the remainder of the material. By using the "frog example" to explain how we as people view the world in there present state is great, by showing the frog having an awaking experience. With the frog evolving with a "new way of thinking, a new way of life, a new value-system and a new frame of reference" shows that by the frog having this ultimate experience he is now starting to understand the real world. The frog is not just living; he now knows how to live life. This shows that we as people just live to live. We must realize that we have to learn how to live life. The first chapter What is Meant By Religion? has a slightly confusing part in it. The paragraph of common symbols, myths and rituals, with the presentation of the cosmic tree, the staircase, the ladder, the bridge, and the potential meaning of transition of onese
The second chapter What is Meant By the Bible? Can portray that if somebody has an ultimate experience they can not be silent. If I reached my personal awakening and told everybody I knew about it, most people would think I was insane. I feel that today people do not speak of their great experience, in fear of prosecution from their peers. Today people must start to believe that being "normal" is not the ideal way of life. I feel that in today's culture people are so built on societal norms that this represses the fact that we can be enlightened. This material has enlightened me personally. When reading these chapters it reminds me that I should not always try to just live but to live life. Also, that having one reality is not ideal. We as people should think about why we just believe what science and math tell us. We should start to realize that there are answers to the unanswerable. They are in people, people who live with us today and in people who lived before us. In chapter four, Non-Attached Life dealing with the concept of reality is very moving. For some people their own way or view of reality is the only reality. These
