Pascal's Wager
Pascal's Wager, formulated by the 17th century mathematician and philosopher Blaise Pascal. In this wager, Pascal gives a formula for the possible existence of God and it's rewards for doing so. In the following, the wager will be illustrated and strengths and weaknesses will be identified. Also explained will be why Pascal would reject both rationalist and empiricist approaches to scientific knowledge.Pascal states in the first argument that we are incapable of knowing whether God exists or not, so we must believe one way or the other. He says that we are stuck between two infinities. These infinities are the beginning and the end of human life. Therefore we have no proof or true ideas of God because humans were not around the at the same time God was or will be in the end. That is why reason cannot decide which direction we should gravitate nor can reason defend your choice, but a consideration of the possible outcomes supposedly can. He mentions a coin toss with only two possibilities, heads or tails, or in his formula's case God exists or he does not exist. Pascal conceived a formula for assessing whether any belief in God or risk is worth accepting or not. He formulated the following: Measure the
In the next argument he reinforces the rational thinking by giving different examples of his formula where it is one life that is wagered and there is the potential to win two or three lives. This is done to illustrate in terms other than infinite and zero. It shows that you are rationally required to wager because your loss is zero and your gain is three lives if you win. That was a hypothetical case to show that you are even more rationally required to bet for God in the original wager because your prize is not three lives but infinite happiness and heaven. Then comes Pascal's final argument in which he focuses on ways for the nonbeliever to gain faith in their wager for the existence of God if they choose too. Pascal says our inability to believe is a problem of our emotions. It is then stated that we shouldn't look for more evidence in order to gain faith but to try to control our emotions. He then goes on to say that by doing this you will become a better person because you are now moral, true, just, honest, and an all around good person. The emotions he speaks of controlling are the poisonous pleasures, glory and luxury. Then if you continue on this path you will come to realize that you wagered on a sure thing and will receive infinite happiness at no cost to you. All you need to do follow in the footsteps of someone who was once an unbeliever and do what they do while suppressing the emotions that keep you from believing. All this requires, says Pascal, is will. Pascal also believes that faith is a gift from God, and if you bet in favor of God even though you may start out as a nonbeliever God will grant you faith if you are truly search
