Franklin Roosevelt
The legendary president was born on Jan 30, 1882, at the family estate in Hyde Park. Franklin was born in a wealthy family. Franklin went to Groton School in Massachusetts. He also attended Harvard. While at Harvard, Franklin fell in love with Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, his fifth cousin. Franklin married her in 1905. Franklin greatly admired his fifth cousin Theodore Roosevelt. Following his footsteps Franklin entered politics as a democrat. He won the New York State senate in 1910. Josephus Daniel's, Woodraw Wilson's Secretary of Navy, had offered the successful Franklin a position as Assistant Secretary of Navy. He was Assistant Secretary during 1913 to 1920. He was the Democratic vice-presidential nominee in 1920. 1921 Franklin met the bad side of life, he was diagnosed poliomyelitis which left his legs paralyzed. In 1924, Roosevelt helped Alfred Smith to get the presidential nomination. Smith later pressured him for running for governor in New York. In 1928 he became the governor of New York. Roosevelt became the first Governor to set up an effective state relief administration.
But now some businessmen and bankers were turning against him. They feared his experiments, were good because he had taken the Nation off the good standards and allowed deficits in the budget. Roosevelt responded with a new program of reform: Social Security, heavier taxes on the wealthy, new controls over banks and public utilities, and an enormous work relief program for the unemployed. Roosevelt easily defeated Alfred M. Landon in 1936 and went on to defeat Wendell Willkie in 1940 and Thomas E. Dewey in 1944 (Electric Library). Therefore, he became the only American president to serve more than two terms. After his overwhelming victory in 1936, Roosevelt took on the critics of the New Deal, the Supreme Court that had declared various legislation unconstitutional.
