There are numerous changes that take place between the central and late Middle Ages. The Black Death serves as a divider between the two periods. The Black Death was only an additive to the crisis of the late middle ages. The Plague erupted in the late 1320's; a bacillus that wiped out millions. The plague brought on many problems, social and economic. It made old problems worse and added new ones.

There were many social problems that were brought on by the plague. Before this crisis, human populations were expanding above and beyond limits of food supplies. When those limits were passed, famine, epidemics, wars, and mortality resulted. Due to the plague, there was a steep drop in population. The plague touched everyone, the rich and poor the same. It also served as a catalyst for the renaissance, which occurred soon after. The Black Death has made a major impact on the history of the world.

The plague also took its toll economically. Cities were hit very hard by this crisis. Financial business was disturbed as debtors died and creditors found themselves out of money. Not only was the creditor deceased, but in most cases, his whole family had died also, along with many of his kinsmen. So there was no one to collect from.
