their eyes were watching god
Zora Neale Hurston\'s novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, takes place during the Harlem Renaissance; which was a time for black artists to try and obtain their dreams. It was a time for everyone to make an attempt at achieving their own versions of the American Dream. The novel takes place in the 1920\'s in the town of Eatonville, Florida. Blacks and whites were still segregated but despite color, people still had dreams of being prosperous and happy. The main character in the book, Janie, encountered many obstacles and in the end found a way to overcome them. Her whole life she had been treated badly by men and was yearning for respect and dignity. Janie\'s idea of the American Dream was to overcome everyone else\'s expectations and find personal freedom and true love. Janie was forced by her grandmother to marry her first husband, Logan. She married him in order to please her grandmother and to supposedly obtain security and respect. Janie was not in love with Logan but she thought that love came with marriage. She expected what all she would have to do is, \"go on inside and wait for the love to begin.\" (p. 21) She believed she would eventually fall for Logan and be happy but as time rolled on, she simply describe
Joe Starks was Janie\'s second husband and he was extremely charming but she eventually realized he was a selfish man, out to make himself popular. Janie met Jody when he was walking by her home one day. They hit it off well and soon after, Janie ran away with him. He promised her many luxurious things yet never kept his word. Soon enough she was miserable and realized she had no love for this man at all. After Joe yelled at her for an innocent mistake at the shop, \"she stood there until something fell off the shelf inside her. Then she went inside to see what it was. It was her image of Jody tumbled down and shattered. But looking at it she saw that it never was the flesh and blood figure of her dreams.\" (p. 68) Her dream of true love and personal freedom was far from being fulfilled. He treated her as a slave and believed the only reason people knew and respected her was because he told her that, \"in de very beginnin\' dat Ah aimed tuh be uh big voice. You oughta be glad, \'cause dat makes uh big woman outa you.\" (p. 43) He looked at her as if she was nothing and believed he was the one that would bring her fortune and happiness. After many years had gone by, Joe became sick and Janie was more relieved then sad. She could free herself from his controlling behavior. Before he was dead, Janie claimed there \"was already something dead about him.\" (p. 73) He treated her terribly and although he wasn\'t physically dead, Janie knew that his thoughts and conscious were gone. His feelings for her and his respect for her had diminished a long time ago. She knew neither of her dreams would come true with Joe, so after he died she set out by herself hoping to accomplish her own American Dream. d the mar
